Mihalic is regarded as one of the finest poets now writing in Yugoslavia. He is the author of nearly 20 collections of poetry, translated into a number of European languages. He belongs with Herbert, Miroslav Holub, and other Eastern European poets, to a generation that survived unimaginable violence.
Slavko Mihalic was born in 1928 in Karlovac, Croatia. As a journalist, he came to Zagreb, where he worked as an editor and publisher. He was the editor of The Bridge, a periodical in foreign languages. He was also the secretary of the Association of Croatian Writers. For several of his poetic works, Mihalic has been awarded some of the most distinguished literary prize.
