Painter, printmaker, and publisher as well as a poet, Roland Giguère has for over 30 years been a dominant force and a unique voice in the literary and artistic life of Quebec. His first poems drew upon the liberating aesthetic of the French surrealists, with whom he early discovered a natural affinity. Surrealism for the young poet was both sustenance and an instrument of subversion in the struggle against the stultifying influence of the Duplessis regime. His work since then has lost none of its impulsive energy, nor its confidence in the curative power of the imagination.
