From Monday the 15th of January 1979 to Tuesday the 29th of April 1980, the author kept a more or less daily journal. He was living in Montreal, on the slope of Mount Royal where he loved to follow and walk the narrow footpaths, from where you can see the city, the river, and a whole landscape corresponding to his own roots — the Poitou landscape in France where he was born and where those who gave him life lie. He let his notes take him down alleyways, down many roads, to embrace not only the moment but intimations of the origins of history on the American continent.

“Marteau’s descriptions are minute and vivid, with sharp images, worthy of poetry; they are like a slow turning kaleidoscope of the seasons.” —Vancouver Sun
