The Italian Cultural Institute of Toronto, over the last 20 years, has played a unique role in the life of this country. Taking culture in its broadest sense – not just the arts, but science and the law and technology, too – the Institute has brought together the great shaping figures of the two countries in our time. In a profound sense, Italy has been put on stage across Canada, and Canada has been encouraged to play itself in a whole series of one-man shows in rome, Bologna, Milan and Venice. It’s been a grand exercise in reciprocal cultural enrichment, and 50 of these figures…McLuhan, Atwood, Lina Wertmuller, Morley Callaghan, Berio, Quilico, Frye, Anna Antonacci, Maureen Forrester, Polanyi, Cucchi, Michael Snow, David Cronenberg, and more…have been photographed by the great Canadian portraitist, John Reeves.
