My Mother’s Flowers

Daria Yemec, an artist born in Ukraine, burst out in two wonderfully creative summers of pastels: this amazing collection of flowers, painted in various family gardens around Toronto, is such a lyric celebration of colour, that the pages dance to life.

Joining the celebration is her son, George Yemec, whose poems are not only a confession of love for his mother, who in her youth danced in Warsaw, Berlin and Paris, but a recognition of a suddenly revealed love of life in pastels, flowers that transcend years of turmoil, the great famine of the thirties, a husband in Siberia, the Great War, a displaced persons’ camp, the dislocation of resettling in Canada.
