Silent Doors

Born in 1929, Slavicek was a leading modern Croatian poet. He is a lonely figure, a quiet traveller through the streets of the ordinary world. He has developed a prosaic diction that corresponds to his vision, a diction that allows him to register ordinary life in its various manifestations and moods, sometimes using the flat tone of the “classified advertisement” and sometimes the wry tone of the inquisitive vagabond. He makes an imaginative plea, through this tone, for mankind, its brotherhood.
