Waking in Eden consists of twelve short fables whose strands are drawn together by the long title piece. It is the story of Tadeusz and Helena, refugees from totalitarianism. He works with porcelain, she is serving a prison term for her drunken hit-and-run killing of a child. Her past has even more terrible things to overcome than her present situation, as she and Tadeusz reach towards each other, wanting to give a shape to their world when she is released.
The title story won the National Magazine Award for fiction (1990).
